In this course, the student will explore the social aspects of aging and how aging impacts his life and those around him, as well as communities, nations and the world. Students will gain insight into the social determinants of the human life course, including the biological and sociodemographic dimensions of aging, sociological theories of aging, and the ways in which the experience is socially constructed. Students will examine how the United States and other countries will be challenged by “aging societies” and the effects of this change—positive and negative—for individuals, families, employers, community service providers, and public policy.
