Principles and Techniques of Interviewing and Counseling

This course explores the techniques for establishing a stable working relationship with a client and examines prominent contemporary approaches to interviewing and counseling from theoretical and practical standpoints.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the major concepts pertaining to interviewing and counseling. This includes learning about counseling skills, theories, change processes, settings and stages of counseling/interviewing.

  • Understand of the APA ethics code, major ethical considerations, and ethical challenges as it relates to counseling psychology and working with others in the helping field.

  • Describe the historical background, cultural context and philosophical assumptions which formed modern counseling and continue to shape its contemporary practice.

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the various DSM V diagnostic categories, as well as an understanding of which interventions are appropriate for a range of mental health issues that clients may present when coming for counseling.
