This course includes an introduction to the profession of audiology, basics of audiological assessment, and focus on the key role that the auditory system plays in the development of speech and language skills. We will cover audiology topics that are specifically pertinent to speech - pathologists, such as early intervention, auditory processing disorders, school services, and screening for hearing loss as part of the speech - language evaluation.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Describe scope of practice of audiologists, and be familiar with audiology as a profession.
Explain basic auditory anatomy and sound transduction.
Administer and interpret basic pure - tone testing and screening (via simulated software)
Differentiate between types, degrees, and configurations of hearing loss.
Identify remediation options for various hearing disorders.
Understand the pivotal role accurate hearing plays in speech - language development and remediation
